The Saver and the Spender - Money Personalities

This combination is a tough one because it involves a couple’s day-to-day lives. The Saver wants to make dinner at home, the Spender wants to go out. The Spender gets himself a nice bathrobe and the Saver resents it every morning when she sees it hanging on the hook. The Saver buys single-ply toilet paper and the Spender gets literally and figuratively chaffed every time he uses it. These might sound like petty examples, but if this is your combination, you know they are just scratching the surface. Every little purchase, every financial decision creates tension. This combination can quickly degenerate into all kinds of shaming, controlling behavior. The Saver can try to clamp down on the Spender, which leaves the Spender feeling like a child who can’t be trusted with money. Or the Spender belittles the Saver’s efforts by calling him petty or cheap. It can even run into other parts of the relationship. If the Spender comes home from Target with gifts for the kids and the Saver makes a comment, the Spender can feel like her partner is putting limits on how she shows love to her children. The Saver can feel like his partner is spoiling the kids. The whole thing becomes a mess of accusations and hurt feelings.
