The Spender and the Risk Taker - Money Personalities

In some ways, these two money personalities compliment each other very well. Both of these types see money as a tool for getting what they want out of life. They don’t argue about the amount they spend. Instead, they argue about how their money is spent.

This match can be a breeding ground for resentment, control, and shaming. If the Risk Taker ends up making great financial deals, the Spender will probably be pretty happy—there’s more money so there’s more spending. But if the Risk Taker takes a hit—especially if there is more than one big loss—the Spender can become deeply resentful and shaming. This is the pairing where we hear couples say things like, “If you hadn’t blown our retirement on that pyramid-scheme, we wouldn’t be scrambling to pay our mortgage now.” That kind of shame and blame spells big trouble for a relationship.

It works the other way too. Risk Takers can become resentful of Spenders when they find themselves unable to take a financial risk because the Spender has drained the budget. They start to feel like they have no control over the money decisions—and Risk Takers hate feeling controlled. And when this relationship starts down that road, it typically ends with financial infidelity.
